Experienced Genetic Researcher David M. Gilbert of San Diego

A leading figure in the study of the human genome, Dr. David M. Gilbert is a professor at the San Diego Biomedical Research Institute, where he leads investigators of cellular regulation of chromosome replication and its mis-regulation in disease. Dr. David M. Gilbert’s other responsibilities include securing grants and supervising lab technicians and postdoctoral fellows. Conducting postgraduate research and teaching since 1990, he has won several awards for excellence in his field.

Earlier, Dr. Gilbert was a professor at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. Instructing graduate and medical students in molecular biology and biochemistry, he also directed the PhD program and summer undergraduate research fellowship program. Before coming to SUNY, Dr. Gilbert was a postdoctoral scientist at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in New Jersey and the Centre National Recherche Scientifique in Strasbourg, France.

Dr. Gilbert earned a BA with honors in biochemistry and cell biology from the University of California San Diego. He then attended Stanford University, where he earned a doctorate in genetics. A frequently invited speaker at various seminars and conferences, he is a member of the American Cancer Society and the International Society for Stem Cell Research. He has also written three books on genetics.

In his spare time, Dr. Gilbert is a musician who has released two CDs of original songs. He is also an avid sailor and coached K-10 children in basketball for 12 years.
